That Should Be Theatre, Eh.

District 9 PosterWhen it comes to movies about alien invasions Canada doesn’t exist. Mars Attacks!, Independence Day, The Day The Earth Stood Still – not even a mention of our great country. Fine, so Hollywood doesn’t want to vapourize the C.N. Tower or Rogers Centre (both of which would lend themselves well to destruction on film); we’ll get over it.

District 9, the recent box office hit, doesn’t even include America! It’s all set in Johannesburg, South Africa. So when I saw the ads for it around Toronto I was a little surprised by what I read at the bottom – “In Theaters”. Wait, was that “theater”? That’s right, the folks over at Sony Pictures had the nerve to use the American spelling on the Canadian poster (and on the streets of Toronto no less!)

With us Torontonians up in arms over Coors Light ads calling us “cold” this week why has no one stepped up to complain about this error? Do we just not care that the Americans are trying to take our unique spelling of words away from us? Will we soon be using “color” instead of colour?

Conspiracy theories aside I don’t think it’s that big a deal. And besides the wording the posters are pretty cool. What really matters most is that the movie rocks. But as a sensitive city someone must be offended.
