Opening Weekend: This Movie is Broken, Sounds Like a Revolution, Knight and Day, and Grown Ups

For us Toronto folk the movie to see this weekend is Bruce McDonald’s dramatic concert film This Movie is Broken. Featuring footage of Broken Social Scene’s performance on the Harbourfront during the garbage strike of 2009 mixed with a fictional romantic storyline written by Don McKellar, it is the coolest movie set in our city ever made. It also features one my favourite Canadian actresses, Georgina Reilly, who you might remember from McDonald’s 2008 horror film Pontypool.

Another great music-themed film opening this week (at The Royal) is Summer Love’s documentary Sounds Like a Revolution, which looks at the current state of protest music. It’s quite an amazing accomplishment that will hopefully inspire people the way it inspired me. Anti-Flag’s Justin Sane will be performing after select screenings this weekend and the filmmakers will be doing Q&A’s.

The two big Hollywood films hitting theatres include the Tom Cruise-Cameron Diaz action flick Knight and Day and the silly Adam Sandler film Grown Ups. Neither looked that intriguing to me so I didn’t screen them. From the reviews I’ve read both were pretty much what I expected and neither are that good.

Some smaller films opening include the indie comedy Cyrus (starring Jonah Hill and John C. Reilly), the coming-of-age film Hey Hey It’s Esther Blueburger, and the second Coco Chanel biopic, Coco & Igor.
