Opening Weekend: Toy Story 3, Winter’s Bone, and Jonah Hex

Toy Story 3Toy Story 3 doesn’t need an introduction or any extra praise. I gave it a solid 5 out of 5 and truly believe it is the best film of the year so far. It’s also currently sitting at 99% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes so I’m not alone in my assessment (it was at 100% until Cole Smithey and Armond White panned it). It’s not a question of if you should go see it, it’s how many times?

A film I’m not planning on seeing in the theatre at all is the comic book-based western, Jonah Hex. I was all set for the screening until I watched the trailer again and just couldn’t do it. From what I’m hearing today it’s a huge pile of rubbish and I made the right move by skipping it. Peter Howell calls it “artlessly directed and sloppily written” in the Toronto Star and I think that about sums it up for the rest of the critics I’ve read.

Winter’s Bone was very well made, and I did enjoy the performance Jennifer Lawrence gave, but I just don’t understand what all the fuss is about and definitely wouldn’t put it on a pedestal the way some have (I didn’t do an official review but if I did it would probably only get three stars). If you want a dramatic thriller this weekend though, it does succeed.

Also opening in Toronto this week is Holy Rollers (about a couple of young Orthodox Jews who get into the drug dealing business), the documentary Journey From Zanskar (which follows Buddhist monks as they bring about a dozen children to a Tibetan school), and Sook-Yin Lee’s sex-crazed Year Of The Carnivore (about sex). And don’t forget the NXNE film festival is still running until Saturday night.
