New On DVD: August 3, 2010

A ProphetMy must-see DVD pick this week is A Prophet — a very gritty crime-drama about a young Arab man (Tahar Rahim) who is sent to a French prison and soon after gets involved with mobsters in order to protect himself. Solid performances, direction, and story had me rooting for A Prophet to take home the Best Foreign Film of 2009 Oscar at the Academy Awards earlier this year (the Academy felt otherwise and awarded The Secret in Their Eyes the Oscar instead). In French and Arabic with English subtitles. Available on DVD and Blu-ray.

Also available on DVD and Blu-ray this week:

Kick-Ass (DVD/Blu-ray)
Diary of a Wimpy Kid (DVD/Blu-ray)
The Ghost Writer (DVD/Blu-ray)
Road to Perdition (Blu-ray)
James and the Giant Peach (Blu-ray)
The Kim Novak Collection (DVD)
