Nominees for 26th annual Gemini Awards announced

Gemini LogoThe nominees for the 26th annual Gemini Awards were announced this morning at the Intercontinental Hotel’s SkyLounge in Toronto. The Gemini Awards, organized by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, recognizes outstanding achievement in the field of Canadian produced English language television and digital media programming. The list of nominees were more or less what one would expect with CTV juggernaut Flashpoint leading with 17 nominations, but several first time nominees also gained some huge buzz with numerous nominations.

Following Flashpoint for the most nominations was HBO’s comedy Call Me Fitz, which nabbed a whopping 16 nominations in its first season on the air. The off-beat comedy, which stars Jason Priestly as a morally bankrupt car salesman forced to confront his own conscience, gained nods for Best Comedic Series, Best Actor in a Comedic Role for Priestly, Best Ensemble, two nominations for Direction in a Comedic Series, and several more for guest and supporting actors. TMN’s Living in Your Car followed for the most comedic nominations with 10, including Best Comedic Series. Rounding out the Comedic Category are CBC stalwarts 22 Minutes and The Rick Mercer Report, along with TMN’s Good Dog and CBC’s Halifax Comedy Fest 2010.

Flashpoint, in addition to being nominated for Best Dramatic Series, picked up numerous directing and technical nominations. Lead actor Enrico Colantoni also picked up a nomination for Best Lead in a Dramatic Series. Joining Flashpoint in the Dramatic Category are costume dramas The Borgias (Bravo!/CTV) and The Tudors (CBC) along with Showcase’s Endgame and TMN’s reboot of the British series Skins.

The Gemini Awards will begin to be handed out on Tuesday, August 30 and Wednesday, August 31 with a live television broadcast of winners airing on CBC on September 7. For a full and extensive list of nominees in all categories, visit geminiawards.ca.
