Transformers: Dark of the Moon (Blu-ray) Criticize This! Pick of the Week - While most people love to crap all over Michael Bay and his Transformers movies, I appreciate them for making me feel like a kid again and wowing me with amazing effects. I don’t expect anything else out of them other than robots who can transform into cars and other vehicles who also beat the hell out of each and blow stuff up. And Dark of the Moon delivers everything I wanted it to and then some. The film looks stunning on Blu-ray, and the 7.1 DTS-HD sound mix just kills. Unfortunately there are no special features included on the regular Blu-ray release as they are being saved for a future Blu-ray 3-D release. A regular DVD and digital copy of the film are included though. Film **** Blu-ray **** (out of 5 stars). NOTE: Transformers: Dark of the Moon is being released on September 30.

Mimic: The Director’s Cut (Blu-ray) - I remember enjoying Guillermo del Toro’s creepy killer bug movie Mimic a lot more when it came out in 1997. It’s still a decent watch on a rainy night, but is just not as scary or intriguing as it once was. Maybe that has to do with del Toro’s re-imagining of it, which does seem to take away some of the cheesy horror element I liked about the film. This is a dark movie and the image on the Blu-ray transfer seems to be trying to overcompensate for the darkness and it appears grainy in some scenes. The 71. DTS-HD sound mix is awesome though, especially when they’re in the subway tunnels and you can hear eerie bug noises from every direction. Special features include audio commentary with del Toro, deleted scenes, making-of featurettes, interviews, and more. A regular DVD and digital copy of the movie are included as well. Film *** Blu-ray *** (out of 5 stars).
