Review: Wound

A scene from 'Wound'.

Wound is a nasty piece of work from the mind of New Zealand cult filmmaker David Blyth that will leave you feeling dirty and confused if you can make it all the way to the end.

Right out of the gate the film lets you know it’s not going to be a pretty experience when the protagonist, Susan, murders her father and cuts off his penis (which we get a lovely close-up of). We gather there is some deep-rooted issues of incest controlling Susan’s anger towards dear old dad, but since it appears there was no script for Wound ever written, we can only guess.

The rest of the movie is a collection of weird, senseless scenes, such as Susan having clothes pegs placed on her nipples or pooing into tin foil sp she can freeze it. It’s irritating more than shocking, and never amounts to anything worthwhile on screen.

The one praise I will give the film is to Kate O’Rourke in the role of Susan. For what she has to work with she did a wonderful job keeping me in my seat. Here’s hoping the movie does not ruin her career as she is so much better than this material.

With so many alternatives in this genre that are more engaging (Antichrist comes to mind), don’t bother wasting your time on Wound.

Wound opens in Toronto September 2, Calgary, Edmonton, and Saskatoon September 16, and plays for one night only in Hamilton on September 6.
