This is a recap of the seventh episode of Pan Am, entitled Romance Languages. Spoilers ahead if you have not seen it!
The episode starts off in the middle of a party in Maggie’s apartment. I don’t know why, but ’60s parties always seem cooler. Maggie leaves the party to have a tryst with Michael at his place at the end of the night. (Because he has “amazing credentials”.) This leaves Maggie with Jo, a sailor she met on a flight from Madrid. Cue the really confusing flashbacks about how they met and why Laura’s so nervous about him. (He tried to kiss her. Shocking!).
I feel like the situation involving Laura and Jo is the afterschool special portion of the show, where they talk about inter-racial relationships and how wrong Laura was to spurn Jo’s advances cause he was African-American.
While the girls were all hanging out on the plane floor (in yet another flashback, this one before the start of the Madrid trip), Maggie dares Colette to tie a cherry stem into a knot, which gives Ted dirty ideas. I can just see his head churning with them. And Laura reveals she posed nude for Life magazine. I don’t know how she doesn’t think that these will get out and get her in trouble with Pan Am. Can’t wait to see how this will unfold further.
Meanwhile, Kate and Niko are hanging out in her apartment, talking late into the night. But the CIA barge in and take him to try to “convince” him to be a double agent. Somehow Kate’s shocked how this is going down. She has to convince Niko to go along but is upset when she learns he is going back to Yugoslavia.
Laura meanwhile goes out with Jo after he slept over on the couch. An angry white man harasses Laura and Jo comes to her rescue, which makes another angry white man start a fight and now it’s a brawl!
In one of the confusing flashbacks, Dean let Collete fly the plane. I just know they’re getting together. Ginny who? Speaking of which, where was she? I was waiting for her to show up. What exactly did Maggie reveal to Henderson?
In the end, Niko decides to be a double agent for the CIA. Not that he had much choice. He pretends to run into Kate and they say goodbye in a strange third person conversation. I kept thinking they would drop the charade and just make out. It was so disappointing that it didn’t happen. Kate will just have to rely on memories. Until the next foreign diplomat comes along….
