Listen to these covers

Covers can be a tricky and difficult task for any musician, covering an icon like Neil Young makes the venture all the more daunting. Despite the pressure to appease their own fans, and not massacre the original, thus offending the many Neil Young fans, two bands have successfully covered Young this year.

First up, we have Chromatics, whose album Kill for Love is a great return for a veteran band that had not released a record in five years. Much like the rest of the album, the Aussie band’s take on ‘Hey Hey My My’ is full of dark, dissonant tones, yet is still oddly dancable and downright sexy. Titled ‘Into the Black’, the cover sounds rather unlike any of the myriad versions of the song recorded by Young, not only because of the female vocals.

On the other end of the spectrum lies Poolside, a Los Angeles based duo who produce breezy, chill summertime electro-pop, much like you’d expect from their name. The duo call their particular type of music ‘daytime disco’, whatever you want to call it, their cover of ‘Harvest Moon’ is full of hand claps and will have you dancing.

Poolside’s debut Pacific Standard Time came out on July 9th via Day & Night Records.
