Battleship (Blu-ray) Criticize This! Pick of the Week – Let’s be honest here, Battleship is the ultimate campy summer flick and is not going to win any awards for its merit. It’s an alien invasion movie that is based on a board game that has nothing to do with aliens. It’s poorly written and the acting is C-grade at best (even Liam Neeson, who has a very small part, plays it up and looks silly). But it’s fun! And the action scenes are done extremely well and in the end it’s an entertaining, check-your-brain, cinematic romp. Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgård, and Rihanna also star. This a film meant to be seen in high-def and the Blu-ray release has a perfect image transfer and an amazing 5.1 DTS-HD sound mix that will have your home theatre begging for forgiveness. Special features include making-of featurettes, a tour of the USS Missouri, and more. A regular DVD and digital copy are included as well. Film *** Blu-ray ***** (out of 5 stars).
The Walking Dead – Season 2 (Blu-ray) – After I instantly got hooked on the first season of AMC’s amazing zombie series, The Walking Dead, I was extremely let down when the second season began and I found myself bored with it and hating the characters. I even considered giving up on the entire show I was so disappointed with the first few episodes. Then midway through the season it started to pick back up and hooked me again. Rewatching the entire season on Blu-ray over the course of a weekend, I’ve come to realize there is a lot more going on in the show that I never caught and like a good film, watching it again helps you appreciate every aspect of it. If you haven’t gotten into The Walking Dead yet pick up the first and second season and get started. The 4-disc Blu-ray set for season two is a must-have for fans of the show as the high-def image just shines. Special features includes making-of featurettes, deleted scenes, audio commentaries on select episodes, and more. Season 2 **** Blu-ray **** (out of 5 stars).
Also available to Watch @ Home this week is Aardman’s The Pirates! Band of Misfits, The Lucky One, starring Zac Efron, and the first season of Showtime’s Homeland.
