In this, the second installment of Listen to this ripoff, we take a look at a pair of strikingly similar songs from somewhat similar artists, Modest Mouse and Sonic Youth.
What more can be said about Sonic Youth? The New York art-rockers are known for their avant-garde noise filled tracks, but one of their slower cuts off 1995′s Washing Machine seems to have intrigued followers Modest Mouse.
Take quick listen to ‘Unwind’.
Nearly a decade later, after a string of good albums which garnered critical praise but only a niche audience, Modest Mouse released Good News for People who Love Bad News in 2004. Produced by the great Dave Fridmann, the album featured hits like ‘Float On’ and ‘Ocean Breathes Salty’ as well as the slower track ‘Blame it on the Tetons’. ‘Unwind’s unique riff is borrowed heavily to create ‘Tetons’, as a quick listen will make apparent.
Both good bands in their own right, this is an example of a band leaning on their influences perhaps a bit too heavily.
