Prometheus (Blu-ray) Criticize This! Pick of the Week – On a mission to find the key to the human race, a team of scientists venture to a distant planet with similar qualities to Earth. Once there, they discover a race not much different than ours and go looking for a live specimen. Unfortunately, something has wiped them all out and there is not a single being alive. As they investigate further they realize there is something else lurking around the planet and soon they’re fighting for their lives against the unknown creatures that are attacking them. It doesn’t matter if Prometheus is a prequel to Alien or not. It works as a standalone sci-fi horror and features excellent direction by Ridley Scott, amazing set design, and great performances from Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, and Charlize Theron. Upon a second viewing it’s also a much more enjoyable watch and is one any true genre fan will come to cherish with time. The Blu-ray is outstanding and features a stunning 1080p image transfer and crazy 7.1 DTS-HD audio mix. Special features include audio commentary with director Ridley Scott, making-of featurettes, deleted and alternate scenes, and more. A regular DVD and digital copy are included as well. Film **** Blu-ray **** (out of 5 stars).
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (Blu-ray) – Children of the ‘80s rejoice! Steven Spielberg’s family-friendly, 1982 alien classic, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, is finally available on Blu-ray. And boy does it look and sound great! You probably know the story by now — an alien creature left on Earth befriends a young boy who tries to help him get back home. The movie launched the careers of actors Henry Thomas and Drew Barrymore, put Spielberg at the top of the Hollywood totem pole, and gave us enough pop culture material that we’re still quoting the film 30 years later. Although this is the 20th anniversary cut of the film only (meaning no guns are shown), the restoration is impeccable and the film has never looked or sounded better (it sports a 1080p image and 7.1 DTS-HD sound mix). Put this on your must-own list now. Special features include deleted scenes, a look back on the film with Spielberg, many making-of featurettes, and more. A regular DVD and digital copy are included as well. Film **** Blu-ray **** (out of 5 stars).
Cinderella (Blu-ray) - When Disney takes one of their animated features out of the vault to restore it for a Blu-ray Diamond Edition, they go all out and never disappoint. Cinderella is no exception. It looks absolutely gorgeous in high-def and everything about it shines a little brighter. On top of that they’ve included a new 7.1 DTS-HD sound mix as well as a DTS-HD mix of the original mono track. Special features are loaded and include everything from the 2005 special edition DVD as well as new making-of featurettes in HD, the short film Tangled Ever After, and more. A regular DVD of the film is included as well. Film **** Blu-ray **** (out of 5 stars).
Also available to Watch @ Home this week is the big screen adaptation of the musical Rock of Ages and The Raven, starring John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe.
