Brendan Canning @ 8PM
Brendan Canning is a very busy man, not only is he a founding member of the legendary Broken Social Scene –whose appearance at Field Trip was stellar– he’s also part of several Toronto band’s including Cookie Duster, and is a formidable solo artist as well. Head on down to the Hoxton tonight to see him perform some of his own material. The Garrison
William Tyler @ 9PM, US Girls @ 10PM
Just one man and his guitar. That is William Tyler. Tyler is no ordinary man though, the very skilled acoustic picker has toured with Lambchop, Silver Jews, Wooden Wand and Bonnie Prince Billy. Tyler plays a style that owes a lot to John Fahey and Leo Kottke, that’s a very good thing. One of my personal most anticipated acts of the fest. The Horseshoe Tavern
DIANA @ 10PM, Merchandise @ 11PM, Dan Deacon @ 12PM
Toronto band DIANA is one of the biggest buzz bands of this year’s NXNE. The group, which features members of Destroyer, Hidden Cameras and more make innately dancable intricate tunes. Merchandise–who played the secret show at The Shop last night– and Dan Deacon follow, but I, and likely many more, will be there for the early show. The Comfort Zone
Braids @ 11PM, Blue Hawaii @ 1AM
Does dark electronica with a touch of shoegaze sound appealing to you? Then The Comfort Zone is where you’ll want to be tonight. The Arbutus Records showcase will feature Canadian bands with shared members, including the always awesome Braids and Blue Hawaii. The Great Hall
Coeur de Pirate @ 11PM
Pourquoi pas écoutez quelques chansons en français ce soir? Ça fera du bien!
Montreal’s Coeur de Pirate, born Beatrice Martin, has a beautiful voice that can at times evoke Françoise Hardy and Brigitte Bardot, enveloped in a modern sound that recalls acts like Ohbijou, Jenn Grant or Amy Millan. Martin plays the Great Hall with a few other singer-songwriters tonight.BLK BOX
No Joy @ 12AM
I had nothing but praise for No Joy‘s Pleasure to Wait, released earlier this year, and it will be a pleasure to wait for them to take the stage at midnight tonight. Be sure to bring earplugs and nice looking shoes to BLK BOX tonight, because you’ll be gazing at them often.Sneaky Dee’s
DL Incognito @ 1AM
Canada’s hiphop scene may be at its highest point of notoriety these days with names like Drake, Classified and others hitting it big, but DL Incognito has seen it through highs and lows, having been in the game for ten years. Incognito’s sound is even more old school than that, make a late night stop at Sneaky Dee’s for proof.
